~ You’ll be into this if: like myself, heart wrenching tales ignite your damn soul ~
Hot damn, this book got me good. Kristin Hannah seems to have this way of innocently drawing you in and suddenly it’s two hours later, you’ve cancelled all your plans, ordered uber eats and you can’t put the book down. The Great Alone left me socially unavailable for a good week. This story gave me a clue about things I really had no clue about – what war veteran PTSD can do to a family, how important a sense of community is and how there are people out there living their lives so completely different from anything I have ever known. More than all of this, I learnt that there are two distinct and utterly different types of love – one that is toxic and another that is selfless. You will be able to recognise both in this book, through the romance, the love between a mother and daughter, the friendships that form and the support from a community who relies on each other to get through the harshness of Alaska. This is a story of survival, human resilience and the power of selfless love against all odds
